The NHT Classic Three is simply the best bookshelf speaker they have built in their 22-year history. The Three offers great bass response (close to 40 Hz in room) plus the wide-open, natural sounding midrange and high frequencies that our speakers are famous for. While the Three is a great speaker for Home Theater, the Three is simply remarkable for music playback.
Buying a NHT speaker means you care about getting the best speaker value for your hard earned money. It means and you care about quality craftsmanship and high-end performance. It means you're ready to join the family of fanatics who love music, movies and the best gear that produces them. Welcome to the club--Now Hear This!
Acoustic Suspension for Natural Sound
Like most NHT speakers, the Classic Three is an acoustic suspension design, so there are no ports or holes in the cabinet. The Three uses the air trapped in the cabinet (nature’s perfect spring) to control and damp the woofer cone’s motion. Better control leads to lower distortion, and better deep bass performance.
Acoustic suspension systems require specific design expertise, and much tighter parts and material tolerances than vented designs. The benefits of this extra attention are well documented: high power handling, low distortion, and a smooth bass roll-off that’s key in achieving a seamless blend between the speaker and a subwoofer.
A Three-Way Design in a Bookshelf Speaker
The Classic Three is a 3-way design, which is very unusual in a world of 2-way bookshelf speakers. The deep bass is handled by a custom-designed 6.5” woofer, which features an anodized aluminum cone, and an exclusive low-resonance BMC (Bulk Molding Compound) frame.
Higher frequencies are handled by NHT’s proprietary Tweeter/Midrange module which pairs a ¾” aluminum dome tweeter with a 2” aluminum dome midrange. Both drivers use compact, extremely small neodymium magnets so the drivers can be mounted very close together, which improves phase coherence and helps contribute to the Classic Three’s lifelike sound.
Rigid Cabinet for Reduced Resonance
The Three's cabinet is made with precision CNC milled MDF panels. The front baffle is over 1" thick and the other cabinet walls and extensive internal bracing struts are over 3/4" thick! This sturdy construction provides structural rigidity, and when combined with the cabinet's curved top and bottom panels, significantly reduce cabinet resonances. The cabinet also features variable radiuses flanking the midrange/tweeter module that help to "randomize" upper frequency diffraction effects to provide smooth frequency response both on and off axis. Finally, the beautiful hand-rubbed, multi-coat, high gloss piano-black finish lend a sense of timelessness to its visual aspect.
