    Tonearm Details

    • Gimbal mounting: The entire assembly is mounted on a non-warping aluminium frame. This precision bearing technology rests in ball races by means of hardened and polished steel needles. The same technology can also be found in navigation instruments (gyro) employed in aerospace.
    • Counterweight: The counterweight includes a damper bush to decouple it from the arm tube to reduce colouration.
    • Headshell: The headshell is manufactured from high-grade synthetic materials reinforced by carbon fibre for extreme stiffness and rigidity.
    • Tracking force: After having achieved total equilibrium of the tone arm, tracking force is adjusted by means of a precision torsion spring. Its force is always the same with respect to magnitude and direction. It therefore does not matter if the record player is no totally level.

    1. Lovely craftsmanship and build quality, fine sound

AudioLab handled my order quickly and efficiently and did an exceptional job of keeping me up to date on its progress.

The Thorens lives up to its reputation as an extraordinarily fine turntable. It's lovely, finely crafted, simple to operate, and sounds rich, clear, and sweet. Rumble and hum are almost nonexistent. Setup is easy once you figure out a couple of vague illustrations.

Mechanical operation is smooth and silent. Sound with the Thorens cartridge is rich and full yet, clean, clear and crisp... subjectively extremely nice.

The hinge geometry on the dust cover is notably well done and allows the turntable to be placed quite close to a wall.

Now that said, for what this turntable costs I get to be picky. My standard of comparison is my old 1971-vintage Perpetuum Ebner 2035 with a Stanton 681EE cartridge, which the Thorens succeeds after UPS wrecked the PE (and refused a settlement) coming back from a restorer. The old PE didn't show any of these minor faults:

      - When a record is playing there's a strong acoustic coupling between the wooden plinth and the tone arm. Lowering the dust cover or tapping a nail on the plinth makes a loud sound through the amp. Operating the STOP switch sends mechanical noise through the sound system. The PE's tonearm was much better isolated.

      - Operating the START switch causes a distinct pop through the speakers.

      - There's no storage for the 45 rpm adapter.

      - The dust cover needs a tab or grip so you can move it without covering it with fingerprints.

So all told it's a great product and its actual record-playing performance is above reproach. Just at this price I wish they'd sorted out a couple of details better.
